Degenerative disc disease is a misled term for common people. It is not a disease caused by some external progeny and is rather a condition of the body which is a result of aging and degeneration of bones with it. Many people get curiously concerned about their condition when diagnosed with Degenerative disc disease. It is a misnomer.
Even a completely healthy person can develop this condition as their bones and back discs degenerate with time and aging. It is not a condition to be heavily worried about. But, the pain that occurs can be cured when given enough time to relief and healing process.
There are different ways to cure this condition as well as provide pain relief for the lower back. They include medications, exercise, massage equipments and posture change too.
Degenerative disc disease is one of the most common conditions diagnosed in the world. It is especially due to the ill food and life style which lead to quicker degeneration of the body as well as lower health endurance and wrong postures most of the time. One of the easiest ways to reduce the pain caused due to this condition is medication. Most of the medicines can be acquired over the counter without any medical prescription. So, the medicine intake should be always under the supervision of a physician to avoid any side effects.
1. Acetaminophen (such as Tylenol)
It is a pain medication that works by dampening the brain’s perception of pain. Unlike non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, acetaminophen does not treat the inflammation that usually accompanies pain from a degenerated disc.
Acetaminophen is available without a prescription and is generally considered to be one of the more effective pain relievers for treating painful flare-ups caused by degenerative disc disease.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are a class of pain medications that help reduce the inflammation in the low back that is associated with lumbar degenerative disc disease. They comprise a large class of pain medications with many different options. In addition to aspirin, there are currently several types of both non-prescription (over-the-counter) NSAIDs and prescription brands of NSAIDs.
3. Narcotic pain medications
Narcotics work by having a dissociative effect that helps patients manage pain. Narcotic pain medications are generally used only for severe episodes of low back pain as they can be addictive and patients become tolerant to their pain relieving affects quite quickly (over one or two weeks).
4. Anti seizure medications
These medications, such as Gabapentin are commonly used to prevent seizures and are now increasingly used to help control chronic low back pain. They can be especially useful in patients with nerve pain caused by the degenerated disc.[/su_note]

- This degenerative disc disease treatment involves use of behavioural methods to help patient self-manage their low back pain.
- Cognitive therapy involves teaching the patient to alleviate low back pain by means of relaxation techniques coping techniques such as visualization and other methods.

Pain is also associated to sleep. If you are under low back pain your pattern of sleep becomes abrupt and irregular. The deep sleep that is required for the rest of both mental and physical restoration of energy is also not available due to this. So, for the main sleep pattern to restore stop taking naps even if you feel tired. Take a warm bath before bed and get a book to read before sleeping. Relax your mind and deep sleep will help in relieving back pain naturally.[/su_note]
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Simulation machine or Tens machine is one of the most used products on a daily basis for low back pain. Electrical simulations have been used since ancient periods to relieve muscular as well as mental distress due to the muscular pains. Disc pain is also associated to the discomfort in the muscles due to their decaying. This is why TENS machine works most effectively.[/su_note]
Bracing is a very useful technique in relieving the low back pain. However, it is recommended by the physicians not to use it for long term basis as it may weaken the muscles and bones because of the external relaxation. The back braces are also very addictive due to the ease of placing and portable. Traction can be used as an alternative to back braces if it is not what you want to go for.[/su_note]
Epidural Steroid Injections
The direct delivery of the steroid injections into the epidural space results in pain relief for longest period of time. While the pain relief may slowly tether, the duration is long enough to let the person start exercising and adopt more psychological and physical alternatives to it. This method may seem addictive because of the word steroid but it is not. The injections per person are allowed to be only 3 per year and any more will lead to direct cancellation of the license of the medical personnel as well as legal prosecution.[/su_note]
